The space debris problem can be solved in the near future Source:

So the machine should look like ClearSpace-1 in orbit of our planet

Environmental Pollution is one of the most acute problems of our time. We invariably leave behind a mess wherever. Unfortunately, this applies not only to the surface of our planet, but her orbit. Today our species is responsible for more than pieces of debris that orbit the Earth at phenomenal speeds. The researchers believe that this problem needs to be addressed urgently, as if you do not remove the large pieces , the risk of a collision with them will continue to grow. This is evidenced by the results of a study published in the journal .

Maid of cosmic proportions

According to Director General (ESA) Jan Werner, what is happening today in the Earth's orbit is like swimming in the open sea surrounded by drifting ships that are not sunk and remained on the surface. To clean hundreds and thousands of satellites orbit our planet, will need a real tow truck. And a team of researchers ESA is working on its creation. By 2025, ESA intends to launch into orbit the world's first apparatus for the collection of garbage — the four-armed robot that is able to locate the space debris.

The First of its kind mission for cleaning space debris has received the name ClearSpace-1. However, the beginning of the work will occur in stages. At the moment it is planned to remove from orbit just one piece of the space . This will prove the effectiveness and efficiency of the mission. So, the purpose of ClearSpace-1 will be the remains of a missile launch VEGA ESA in 2013. This garbage has a simple form and weighs about as a small satellite that will allow the robot to easily grab it with four hands. After the debris will be in the hands of the robot, pull it out of orbit and will allow to burn up in the atmosphere. Great, right? That's just this operation will destroy not only debris, but also the robot. Therefore, in the future the engineers at ESA hope to create a safe for the robot's way of recycling. However, the ultimate goal of the ESA is the creation of spacecraft that can autonomously move in an orbit.

ClearSpace-1 during the planned mission of cleaning space debris

How much debris is in orbit of the Earth?

As reported in the official press release of the project at European space Agency, according to General Director of the Swiss startup Luc Piguet, today the problem space as relevant as ever. At this point in space is at least 2,000 operational satellites and more than 3,000 faulty. In the next few years, the number of satellites orbiting the Earth to increase significantly. Note that the development of a robot for cleaning space debris is a joint effort of engineers of ESA and ClearSpace.

However, the establishment of a network of robots designed for cleaning space debris pose a number of challenges. Besides, the work on actuation of the spacecraft is very expensive. All these years, scientists worked to create cheaper options, but none of them proved successful. So, the approximate value of ClearSpace is 117 million euros (129 million U.S. dollars). While ESA is not the only one who is going to clear Earth's orbit of debris — the company Astroscale, located in Tokyo, is also working on the creation of such a robot, however, the value of the Japanese garbage collection is likely to exceed ClearSpace.
