Physics CERN experimentally confirmed a new method of particle acceleration Source:

A New method of proton acceleration of particles was proposed by Russian specialists from the Institute of nuclear physics named after Budker Siberian branch of RAS (BINP). Experimental verification of the method was carried out by scientists of the AWAKE project of the European centre for nuclear research (CERN). The particles were first dispersed with the wave created by the bunch of protons in the plasma. In practice, the method will allow to make future installations more compact, which in turn will reduce the cost of their creation and maintenance. The results of the experiment have been described .

In project AWAKE (Advanced proton-driven plasma WaKefield Acceleration Experiment) working professionals from a dozen countries, including from Russia. Russian physicists have created a theoretical model of a new method of proton acceleration and explained the possibility of its successful use.

"the Team of Institute of nuclear physics Budker name was responsible for the modeling of physical processes in the experiment. The model proposed by them has told us how to build the installation, which will have the parameters and engineering characteristics. The city's residents are helped to find answers to questions about how it will behave, the beam of protons in the plasma, as will be the process of self-modulation", — says lead project AWAKE ed Guenter.

With the traditional method of particle acceleration to high energies relies on a set of high frequency resonators. Passing through these resonate ry, the particle beams are accelerated under the influence of a very powerful electromagnetic field.

The Search for alternative methods of accelerating particles began scientists from CERN in 2013 with the launch of the project AWAKE. The researchers wanted to experimentally prove the effectiveness of alternative methods of acceleration by plasma waves, through which will pass particles.

With the help of the Russian scientists and embodied by project specialists AWAKE method of a particle with initial energy of 19 MeV (megaelectron-volt) passed through the plasma. The length of the field in the plasma was only 10 meters, but it was enough to disperse the particles more than 100 times – up to 2 GeV (GeV).

According to the theoretical project coordinator AWAKE and researcher fellow of the Institute of nuclear physics Budker behalf of Professor Konstantin lotova, the idea of a plasma to accelerate particles was announced in the 70-ies.

The findings of physicists at CERN nevertheless, it is noted that the successful results of the experiment show only a potential benefit from the use of proton acceleration methods of particles. Create accelerator in which to apply this method would only be possible in the future. But this requires new research and experiments with existing installations.

To Discuss the success of the specialists of the CENTRE .
