Russian scientists have developed a new more accurate method MRI of the brain

The Procedure magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has long been an indispensable tool for diagnosing a variety of conditions. It is particularly useful when scanning of the brain. But very soon the MRI will be more accurate as a group of Russian scientists plans to introduce into clinical practice a new method of imaging, which will more accurately and efficiently diagnose disorders of connections between neurons in the brain that help with a number of injuries and diseases like multiple sclerosis.

According to the news portal of the Tomsk region, responsible for the development of a Professor of Tomsk State University (TSU) Vasily Yarnykh. He, by the way is also a member of the University of Washington. A new method based on MRI for quantitative assessment of myelin in different brain structures. Myelin is the sheath of the spikes of neurons. The destruction of the myelin sheath of the connections between neurons are being violated due to the deterioration of signal transmission. This is one of the main signs of multiple sclerosis.

The New technique is based on special protocols magnetic resonance imaging in combination with mathematical algorithms that ultimately gives you the ability to "map the molecular proton fraction", that allows to judge about the content of myelin in brain cells. Now in full swing preparing for clinical testing phase, as experiments on laboratory animals have shown the promise of technology. As stated by head of the laboratory of neurobiology of TSU Marina khodanovich

"Our goal in this study was to find an adequate model, that is, conditions under which there is destruction of myelin in mice, and to compare the amount of myelin in sections of the brain with the results of MRI studies. This work we have conducted in cooperation with the Institute of Cytology and genetics and Institute of organic chemistry in Novosibirsk."
