Recently we told you about that . However, this is not the only way «to use» molecules in the creation of various kinds of electronic devices. For example, a group of researchers from brown University (USA) recently presented the first prototype of the so-called «liquid» hard drive. It is called so because as a media it is a special solution with the molecules inside. But how it works and why you need it?

What «liquid» hard disk

Strictly speaking, the use of molecules as tools to store information — the thing is not new. Have repeatedly tried (and very successful) writing data in molecules . Why is it necessary? It's simple. Due to the special structure , the recording density is several hundred times higher than the same media made according to "conventional" technologies.

This means that, roughly speaking, in its original size on a standard hard drive, you can burn all that data, which before you needed a huge server. However, researchers from the USA have suggested that for this purpose, suitable, but also other molecules on the basis of which they made their first molecular «liquid» hard drive.

How does «liquid»

In their experiments, the researchers used a substance called "metabolome". They are complex sugars, amino acids and other molecules mixed in solution in certain proportions. During recording information, the molecules start to react with each other, forming new connections. They are carriers of information. And reading of recorded data is done by a fairly simple chemical analysis of the composition of the solution.

Moreover, experts say that for recording and storing information you can use a wider variety of molecules, thereby increasing the number of possible combinations of substances and, accordingly, increasing the recording density.

Looks like the first "liquid" to read as follows: a solution of molecules is divided into several parts, each of which is equal in volume to with one nano liter. These pieces of the solution distributed on the surface of the plate. Each part of the solution is placed in his cell. In that moment, when the surface of the plate is served a solution of a different type (this is the "incoming information), it is reacting with the solutions in the cells, forming new substances. These substances remain in the cells and represent an already recorded information. After this it remains only to consider the data that is recorded on the «fluid drive».

This way, during the experiments, scientists were able to record a graphic file with a volume of 2 kilobytes. You can see it in the picture above. It is made in the form of an anchor with the inscription "Hole". Yes, 2 kilobytes — it's nothing compared to the huge-terabyte monsters, available on the market today. But it is understood that this is only the beginning of technology development and under other equal conditions, the new approach is much more promising.
