In Norway found the remains of a mysterious house, where they buried the Vikings

the Reconstruction of the "house of the dead"

Have You ever watched movies about Vikings? If so, you probably know about their unusual burial ritual, where noble rulers and warriors were sent to the afterlife inside the special . However, at some points of Scandinavia archaeologists occasionally find a mysterious structure, which in the times of Vikings also buried people. These structures are known to scientists as the "house of the dead", but they don't know about their mission. Recently, Norway has been found another house with human remains and archaeologists have raised a few assumptions about what he needed.

The Remains of medieval constructions were found in the Norwegian village called Vinera, where at the moment there are works on construction of highways. Archaeologists already knew that in this region once upon a time there was a settlement of Vikings, so in the detection of ancient buildings is not surprising. In particular, the researchers were able to unearth the remains of a burial mound inside of which was deepening with stones to strengthen the walls.

How buried the Vikings?

According to the calculations of archaeologists, the length of the burial structure was five feet and the width was equal to three meters. Heavy stones were at the corners of the buildings and held the walls made of vertical boards. In that researchers found a rare "house of the dead", no doubt — it was built right in the middle of the burial mound and, apparently, was used as a grave. Worldwide found only 15 such buildings, mostly in Denmark and Sweden.

the Tomb was built right in the middle of the burial mound.

The researchers there are two assumptions about the possible purpose of these structures. For example, they could serve practical purposes — they could temporarily bury the dead cold winter of the Vikings to early spring to conduct a more traditional ritual of burial. In this, at least, I'm sure the leader of the current excavations Raymond Sauvage.

Also "the house of the dead" could have a ritual purpose. The Vikings could bury the soldiers inside the tombs and make sacrifices to their souls was calm and they helped them get good harvest. Maybe they simply were afraid of the dead and locked their bodies in such constructions, so they are not out of their graves and disturb them.

Mysterious structures in the world

However, the excavation of the mysterious structures for archaeologists is a usual thing. For example, in Scotland and Ireland, researchers sometimes find — an artificial island on which the ancient Scots were building the house. They can be reached through the outstretched shore bridges of wood or stone, so archaeologists believe that they were used for protection from bandits.

Of Course, the mysterious buildings also is in Egypt. One of them is located near the pyramid of Pharaoh Djoser — is a set of tunnels that had to pass through the souls of dead people. The Egyptians believed that before entering the afterlife, the man will battle with monsters, so it was left for the dead people's weapons and items to protect from the dark forces.
